The sign has to be readable from the road

Two monument signs at an apartment entrance, lit evenly across the face with the planting around them kept low, so the lettering is legible at the speed people drive past it.

What the photograph shows

A monument sign is lit for one distance: the point at which a driver has to decide whether to turn. Bright at two metres is irrelevant.

Even coverage matters more than level. A hot spot in the middle of a sign makes the ends unreadable even when there is plenty of light on them.

  • Even wash across the sign face
  • Planting lit below the lettering
  • Entry drive marked at the turn
  • No light thrown into the carriageway

Every project here started the same way: a walk of the site and a conversation about what the owner wanted to see at night.
