Materials
Stone and brick reward light placed close
Grazing — the fixture set near the wall with the beam travelling across it — turns masonry texture into a field of small shadows, which is why a stone elevation can look flat under a distant floodlight and remarkable under a fixture a metre from the wall. Smooth stucco needs the opposite treatment, and a rounded column another one again.
