Will Other Cities Follow Suit?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In November of 2023, the city council of Aspen, Colorado, voted unanimously to establish an ordinance that included, among other things, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aspendailynews.com\/news\/city-revamps-code-rules-on-outdoor-lights\/article_5481ba76-877c-11ee-8459-237552431878.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">light trespass regulations<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that restrict how much light can extend beyond the boundaries of a given property between the hours of 10 pm and 7 am. The ordinance incorporates some of the recommendations of the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/darksky.org\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">International Dark Sky Association<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which is working toward mitigating light pollution\u2019s harmful effects on humans (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">e.g., <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">disrupted sleep, increased risk of disease and depression) and wildlife (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">e.g.<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, interrupted migration patterns).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Light pollution has been a growing area of concern across the country. In fact, over a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncsl.org\/environment-and-natural-resources\/states-shut-out-light-pollution\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">dozen states have enacted \u201cdark skies\u201d legislation<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in an effort to increase energy conservation, protect human and wildlife health, and promote public safety measures. Many of these regulations include recommendations about installing shielded light fixtures that shine light downward, using warm lighting, which is closer to natural lighting, choosing lower-wattage lighting options, and setting light curfews that restrict the amount of time that certain lighting can be used.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What Can You Do to Decrease Light Pollution?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Although Aspen\u2019s light trespass regulations might inspire other cities to follow suit, especially in areas that have been adversely affected by light pollution, it\u2019s impossible to predict with any certainty since public opinion and local government priorities vary widely across states.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Whether or not your local government enacts dark skies legislation like a light curfew, there are steps that you can take to help decrease light pollution with your own outdoor lighting.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Use Timers or Motion Sensing Lights<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Even if there is not a light curfew in your area, you can set your own by using timers on your lights so they will automatically shut off at a given time. Incorporating smart technology can make setting timers even easier through an app on your smartphone.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Installing motion-sensing lights, especially on the outer perimeter of your property, is another way to conserve energy and minimize light pollution. With both of these options, the lights will only be on when you need them, which will also save you money in energy costs.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Direct Light Only Where it\u2019s Needed<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">By using shielded light fixtures and focusing the light only where it is needed (using downlighting or uplighting techniques), you can avoid creating hot spots of light in your yard or on your home.
